Interestingly, it publishes how hygienic and well managed food preparation is in takeaways, pubs, clubs and local restaurants.

Using Food Standards Agency criteria, it is an independent assessment of data relating to kitchen practices. So, it isn’t about ambience, how good the food tastes or whether someone likes or dislikes it, which is more the highly subjective stuff that sites like Trip Advisor cover. It is more quantifiable and gives an indication that food is prepared and served in hygienic conditions.

IMG_1196The ratings include assessments of food hygiene and safety, structural compliance (layout, cleanliness, lighting ventilation, etc) and confidence in management (compliance being achieved in future). Do actually read the breakdown of the figures though.

Some outlets scoring 1, for example, do well on food hygiene, but fall down on the confidence in management, so the figures require careful reading. However, you should have no qualms about any business scoring a 5.

So, well done to all these Hartland Peninsula businesses who have scored top marks (5) on the food hygiene front during the last year, listed alphabetically.

Of course, new businesses or revamped ones may not have been assessed yet.

The date tells you when the business was last assessed:

Cheristow Lavender 2nd August, 2012

Docton Mill 27th September 2012
