During the month of May 2007, the BBC TV film crew were on location in Hartland filming Sense and Sensibility.
Well known scriptwriter Andrew Davies has adapted this Jane Austen classic for television using Blackpool Mill Cottage in Hartland as the Dashwood's family home.
The cottage is part of Sir High and Lady Angela Stucley's Hartland Abbey estate standing at the entrance to the Abbey stream.
'Probably hardly anybody has ever been to this exact spot but it's so romantic' Davies said to Andrea Charters of the North Devon Journal.10.01.08. He is certainly correct there!
The cottage sits in a secluded cove which many walkers pass by as they ramble on the South West Coast path between Hartland Lighthouse and Hartland Quay.
The beach here is a mixture of pebbles, rocky reefs and sandy gullies. At low tide you can look for prawns in the rock pools, swim and surf.
It is a walkers paradise with its rugged coastline and magnificent scenery.
With such a location, the filming here was mainly of outdoor shots and other areas of the Hartland Peninsula were also used including the cliffside paths on either side of the cottage, the Vale and the Warren.
The cottage had to have a makeover with extra windows, a front porch, a pebble garden and an extra chimney stack!
When the film crew left on the 17 May it took a further week to put the cottage and any locations used back to normal.
A two-page feature with photos appears in the Summer 2007 edition of the Hartland Times. Written by its editor Tony Manley, this excellent bi-monthly journal captures the essence of life on the Hartland Peninsula. |
