The Bear

The Bear (not to be confused with Bear Cottage) is a well appointed, cosy and comfortable cottage situated between Hartland village and Hartland Quay in the Hamlet of Stoke. On the Hartland Abbey estate, it was, many years ago, a hostelry when Hartland Quay lost its licence!

Many beautiful, unspoilt beaches are within easy reach; this is an area for exploring hidden coves unknown to the masses with Welcombe beach and Spekes Mill Mouth within a few miles.

It is within walking distance of Hartland Abbey and many attractions are nearby. The historic fishing village of Clovelly is only 5 miles away, the towns of Bideford, Westward Ho! and Bude 15 miles. The pretty villages of Appledore and Instow are worth a visit; the Tarka Bicycling Trail, The Milky Way and the Big Sheep are good family days out.

From The South West Coast Path, ½mile away, you can walk and see some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the British Isles . There are also plenty of other inland footpaths and small lanes, absolutely beautiful with stunning wildflowers through spring and summer.

In winter the views are spectacular with raging seas in windy weather. There is nothing better than to take a good, bracing walk and then come back and curl up in the sitting room in front of the woodburner in the open fireplace with a good book!

Upstairs the cottage has a king size double room with ensuite shower, toilet and basin, two twin bedded rooms, bathroom with shower taps, toilet and basin, and a child gate at the top of the stairs.

Downstairs, the front door leads into a slate-floored entrance hall off which is a king size double room with bathroom with bath, shower over, basin and toilet. The cosy, half panelled sitting room with woodburner in large, open fireplace, TV and DVD player, a small children’s play room and the well equipped kitchen with Rangemaster cooker, dishwasher and fridge freezer.

Central heating throughout for the colder months and logs are provided. Utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer leads into the sheltered, gated garden equipped with ample seating and table.
