“On the wind from St Ives” in Japan and “In the Blood” in Somerset

On the Wind from St Ives, featuring work by Hartland potter Philip Leach, is a collaborative exhibition in Mashiko, Japan, running until the 23rd October and marking over a century of collaboration between the Leach family of potters and Japanese artists – collaboration which has overcome earthquakes and disasters. The exhibition includes work by Japanese potters who have studied at the Leach Pottery in St Ives.

Read how the extraordinary communities and potters in these two such different places have supported each other through decades of trials and triumphs at the Leach Pottery website. Following a catastrophic earthquake which devastated the town and destroyed many kilns and pots Philip Leach completed a residency there as part of programme inviting British Potters to come and help rebuild the kilns, potteries and ceramic production.

Visit the Mashiko Ceramic museum website to read more about the exhibition and history of this fascinating relationship between two such diverse yet connected communities.

Five members of the talented and prolific Leach family, including Philip, are also exhibiting in the aptly named "In the Blood" exhibition at ACEArts Gallery in Somerset 8th October until 19th November. The Gallery is open Tues – Saturday 10am – 5pm in Taunton.
