Tracey Slocombe from SCBC

The Sweet Chilli Beef Company (SCBC) is a fantastic example of innovation around local food. Based around 140 acre beef farm that runs on ‘grow quietly’, no additive, low stress principles you can eat award winning gourmet food in one of their weekly pop-up kitchens, buy their delicious bottled sauces, book their award winning mobile catering service for your event and last, but definitely not least, join them for one of their unique Food & Farm Safaris.

Foodie Day Out – Farm Safari with Wild Cook

Explore the whole process of farm to fork on one of these fascinating and informative Food & Farm Safaris. The farm is adjacent to Bursdon Moor, where the cattle freely graze, and Hartland Forest, and the safari is as close to nature as possible, reflecting the whole ethos of SCBC. In the Land Rover (or on foot only if it is really wet) explore the native beef herd and meet Albert the bull, the chap behind it all. Learn all about the politics, the breed selection, sustainability and how the herb rich grasses are reflected in the flavour of the meat. Then head out to the field kitchen, a scenic spot against Hartland Forest, where you’ll collectively make up Tracey’s UKCCA (UK Chilli Cook-off Association) public vote winning sweet chilli con carne featured in the recipe below (vegetarian option available too). The dish is kept mild for those who don’t like it hot, but hot sauce is available for those who do! Enjoy what you’ve created in the tipi, if it’s raining, or basking in the sun if possible. Field toilets are available with hand washing facilities.

Cost is £45pp to include the four hour safari and wild cook, all refreshments and snacks, all ingredients for the meal and insurance. The trips run Thursdays & Fridays 9.30am – 1.30pm or 2.30pm – 6.30pm and occasional weekends, please enquire for availability. 8 persons are required. The safaris can also be adapted for land management and food students, and for schools. Please enquire using the contact details below.
