The Old Smithy Inn at Welcombe
Just one mile from the sea and South West Coast Path, right on the Devon/ Cornwall border and set in glorious countryside in the heart of Welcombe the Old Smithy is a very warm, friendly and inviting 17C thatched pub.
Open all year round for great food and wine, local ales, real fires, live music, quiz nights, events and an extremely warm welcome. The pub is an easy walk from the coast or a twenty minute drive from Bideford, Bude or Holsworthy. There's even backpacker's bunk-style accommodation (sleeping 4) if you want to stay the night or are looking for inexpensive accommodation in glorious countryside.
All are welcome: muddy or clean, wet or dry, young or old...and with or without dogs! The pub is genuinely dog-friendly and have two of their own, Clif and Smithy. It's the ideal place for lunch, dinner or drinks after a walk, cycle, surf, ride or drive - or just to spend a few convivial hours.
The pub prides itself on its food: good, honest, hearty English pub food but done well. As much as possible is sourced as locally as possible, and the quality impact of this is noticeable in the finished dishes. There are daily specials, such as Wild Boar Terrine with sage and five berries, Chicken and Bean Cassoulet and Lamb and Apricot Tagine but also a full daily menu, with dishes such as fresh local farm rib-eye steaks, fresh haddock in guest ale batter, vegetable and lentil stew and tray-baked salmon, plus a very popular children's menu and a tempting array of delicious desserts.
Westcounty ales and ciders, a very good choice of white, red, rose and sparkling wine by the glass or bottle (including the excellent value 'Grab my Grapes' promotion on Wednesdays when all bottles with the exception of champagne are either £9.95 or £11.95), single malt whiskies, quality tequilas and a wide range of spirits and soft drinks means there's something for every palette.
Whether you want to relax, eat, drink, drop in for a chat, use the wi-fi or enjoy one of the regular events, this vibrant and welcoming pub is a great place to spend time. There are regular events: folk nights on every second Monday of each month from 9pm, a Jam night every Tuesday (preceded by a Happy Hour) for all to turn up and bring their instruments, voices, poetry or skits; Wednesday is 'Grab my Grapes' all day and £7 main meals in the evening; every Thursday is quiz night (£1 per entry) and also fresh stone-baked pizzas and Sunday brings delicious Old Smithy Inn Sunday lunches.
