Hartland is a fascinating village, which dates back to Saxon times. It was one of the largest royal manors belonging to King Alfred the Great.
Village life
Today the village still has a thriving community boasting three churches, three pubs, two schools, two garages, a medical centre, several grocery shops, a Post Office, antique emporium, a vet, dentist and many skilled craftspeople.
Three Art and Craft Fayres are held in the Parish Hall each year and these are always very popular. There is a diverse range of clubs and societies, playing fields, tennis courts; skateboard and children’s play area, in fact something to suit everyone’s taste.
This charming village is truly unique with some interesting Victorian terraced houses, a raised pavement along Fore Street and a Square with some handsome Georgian properties as well as St John’s Chapel. St John’s with its ancient town clock was built on the site of the old market and town hall. Today it is the home for the male voice choir and the town band.
The parish Church of Saint Nectan, the ‘Cathedral’ of North Devon (situated in the pretty hamlet of Stoke) is magnificent. It makes an imposing landmark with the tower being 39 metres tall, the highest in Devon.
